Module 4 Commercial Awareness

 

Module Overview

This unit addresses the tools and knowledge required by an individual to be commercially aware in a nuclear environment including where their organisation sits in terms of the complex contract management hierarchy within the sector.  In particular, the individual will gain an awareness of the importance of producing business cases awareness, the main forms of contracts and typical considerations that must be aware to ensure that commercial risk is appropriately managed.

The main outcomes are that an individual will;-

  1. Broad understanding of the influencers in the nuclear industry how this influences commercial undertakings (PESTLE)
  2. An understanding of who is ‘responsible’ in the regulatory framework regardless of contracts, including responsibility of the supply chain
  3. Broad understanding of the programme of nuclear industry activities, new build to decommissioning, participants should have a clear understanding of their companies position in the industry context
  4. The key stakeholders involved in delivery of nuclear related tasks
  5. Understanding of business case development, drivers and power base at initial phase and then through delivery
  6. Understand the importance of requirements capture, requirements management and acceptance criteria
  7. Understand the implications of all work/costs have to be justified and the importance of controlling costs (i.e. everybody has a customer)
  8. An awareness of the challenges of ALARP and ALARA, the development and maintenance of safety cases and how they may affect the contract, how to build in contingency, mitigation or caveats to control these
  9. Understand how scope creep and the importance of how the resultant change management has to be managed in the nuclear context
  10. An understanding of the issues surrounding nuclear delivery when faced with conflict management, key considerations including safety and security and ensuring repeat business

The module comprises 4 units, all of which are mandatory

 

Assessment

Outcomes will be assessed by one of the following mechanisms

  • written examination
  • structured interview to assess how behaviours have been embedded by the learner
  • work based case study from the candidates own role in the organisation
