What is the Nuclear Skills Passport?

The Nuclear Skills Passport demonstrates your employees EXCELLENCE in Nuclear Skills

In essence the Nuclear Skills Passport is a system which offers all nuclear organisations instant secure web access to information on the nuclear skills base, offering a detailed overview of the training completed by their workforce as well as contracting organisations. For contractors, the Skills Passport provides a simple, highly secure method of aiding in the demonstration of SQEP.

This enables organisations to effectively assess and plan their training, skills and people requirements. The Nuclear Skills Passport is different to other industry Passport schemes, as it has been designed by Nuclear employers, specifically for the requirements of the Nuclear sector.

The Nuclear Skills Passport will  bring about a step change for the nuclear sector  by introducing a effective vehicle for the introduction of industry agreed and cross site recognition of  internal and external skills development training.  It will be the first time that this has been implemented in the Nuclear sector.  Until now all nuclear sites have trained its employees and contractors to their own high standards, but when transferring staff to different facilities, the training that they have already completed is not recognised, which leads to additional training being carried out.  Nuclear employers have worked with Cogent Sector Skills Council and the National Skills Academy for Nuclear to agree training standards which will be recognised across different sites.  This is known as the Nuclear Industry Training Framework, and forms an important part of the Nuclear Skills Passport.

The diagram above illustrates the training that a new employee may need to undertake on a nuclear site, at different levels.  By recording this training on the Nuclear Skills Passport system, if this person then transferred to a different site, because the training which has been completed is recorded and cross site recognised, the person would only have to complete SITE B specific training, or additional training.
